Cristie Kerr has a new incentive to sink birdie putts on her way to the top of the women's golf rankings this season. Every birdie Kerr records on tour this year will raise valuable funds for breast cancer research through a program called Birdies for Breast Cancer."My mom was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer last year and fought so hard to overcome it," says Cristie. "I knew I had to do something to help fight this horrible disease and after speaking to Evelyn Lauder, founder of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and learning what great progress has been made through properly funded research, we formed the Birdies for Breast Cancer program."Kerr will personally contribute $50 for every birdie she records this entire year and her contribution will be matched by her title sponsor Mutual of Omaha. Proceeds from the program will be presented to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation."Mutual of Omaha is excited to partner with Cristie in raising funds to support breast cancer research, a cause that is very important to our company and our associates. Cristie is off to a tremendous start this season and now her success will mean that much more." said John Hildenbiddle, Mutual of Omaha senior vice president of Brand Management and Public Relations.???"I am thrilled to have Mutual of Omaha support this initiative and I am proud to have them as my sponsor on the LPGA tour" said Kerr.

"They have a great team and I know they are cheering for every birdie."The added incentive appears to be working. The 26 year old Miami native is off to the best start of her 7 year LPGA career, with three top-five placements in the first five events, including a victory at the Takefuji Classic in Las Vegas. Along the way she has amassed 74 birdies, one shy of the LPGA lead, and climbed to 3rd on the LPGA money list. Last year Cristie recorded 295 birdies in 23 events. This week's launch of the Birdies for Breast Cancer website, www.birdiesforbreastcancer.com, will herald the opportunity for friends, fans and corporations to join the fight against breast cancer by pledging additional funds for each birdie Kerr records from this week's Chik-fil-A tournament through the end of the LPGA season in November. Cristie and One-Putt, the official Birdies for Breast Cancer mascot, will update the site weekly with a personal diary entry and fund-raising status report."The response from individuals so far has been great" added Kerr.

"We even had a company contact us that manages a group of private courses who want to participate by starting their own birdie contribution program for their members"For more information on Birdies for Breast Cancer, visit www.birdiesforbreastcancer.com or contact Erik Stevens at 212-366-8675 For more information about The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, visit www.bcrfcure.org or call Anna Deluca at 646-497-2600.

Debt consolidation is a concept that most people are aware of and often is a good idea. Basically when consolidating your bills or loans, you combine the total amount owed and make a single monthly payment instead of many smaller payments through out the month. While this is often a good solution to debt problems, there are a few things that need to be considered first. The first thing to consider is if a consolidation loan is in your best interest. Regardless of how you end up procuring a consolidation loan the basic facts are the same, you are borrowing more than you currently owe to get one monthly payment. Is this convenience worth the extra cost of the fees and interest on a loan for money than you currently owe?Depending upon your situation there may be several courses of action to consider first.

Step one is to take a serious look at you personal budgeting. Do you need to make changes to how you are currently spending your income? If there is too much debt to be repaid at once can you enter into a payment arrangement with your creditors to allow you the time that you need to get ahead? If you are not able to work your way out of your current situation then you need to look at other borrowing solutions. The first option should be to examine what possibilities you already have. Do you have a mortgage? If you have a mortgage there may be a few options available to you. First you may be able to increase the amount of your current mortgage.

In order to increase the amount of your current mortgage you may have to switch lending institutions and basically re-mortgage your home while other places will simply add the extra amount to your current mortgage. The other similar option you have is to take out a second mortgage on your home. In this case you are borrowing against the equity in your home that you have already built up.If you do not have a home but do have good credit then you may have other options available to you such as an unsecured loan. An unsecured loan is a good faith loan meaning that the business that lent to you trusts you enough to repay the loan. This type of loan will not impede your ability to buy and sell property since they will not but a lien on your assets.

This may be important to you if you are planning on selling your vehicle or other assets in the near future.Debt consolidation can be a valuable tool if you know what you are doing and how you got to this point. Debt consolidation may offer lower interest rates, lower monthly payments and only a single bill to pay once a month thus making your budgeting easier. However, the cost of this convenience can be fairly high. Often companies will charge you for settling a loan earlier than arranged thus adding to the total amount owed. Generally consolidated loans payments are less than what you are currently paying.

This is because the term is longer than before. Another way lenders make money is by offering loan insurance that you may already have. It always pays to shop around for any product since the company offering it at the time is usually charging more for the convenience of bundling it.As you can see a consolidated loan can save you money but may not be the best option available to you. The key is to shop around and do your homework. Find out what various companies offer, what kind of interest rate you should expect to pay based upon your credit rating and what alternative options you have available to you.

For example you may be able to borrow from your 401K plan and you will not be charged interest on the loan if you make an arrangement to repay the loan with your employer. A 0% interest loan is a much better option than a consolidated loan..

(NC)-Food is your body's fuel to provide energy to enjoy an active lifestyle. Healthy bodies produce insulin to convert sugar in the blood into energy.

Myths associated with selecting nursing homes suggest quick and easy ways to identify quality care, but relying on these myths can lead to disastrous results. Here are five of the worst ways to select a nursing home.1. The Personal Recommendation:Last weekend Jim, a friend who had put his mother in a nursing home recommended by a friend, called me in a panic. Although his mother was recuperating from a stroke, no nurse or aide checked on her the night before. Jim discovered her in the morning with many cuts and bruises, her sheets soaked in blood.

"I can't believe anyone would recommend that nursing home," he complained. "My friend said her grandmother was in this particular nursing home, so, I thought it would be good care." "How often does your friend visit her grandmother?" I asked him. "I didn't think to ask." "And did you check the latest state survey for that nursing home?" "No," he answered. "I thought a personal recommendation was all I needed." Jim's mother is now back in an area hospital. No one knows if she'll recover.Use personal recommendations only as an addition to your own investigation.

Never decide on a nursing home based on a recommendation alone.2. The Smell Test:You've heard it repeatedly: "The best way to find out about the quality of a nursing home is to notice how it smells."It seldom, if ever, works. Why? Nursing homes have heard the same adage. They are keenly aware of unpleasant odors in areas that might receive visitors. Almost all do their best to remove offensive odors as quickly as possible, even if it means avoiding their primary responsibility to their residents.

3. You Get What You Pay For:Nowhere is this statement less applicable than in nursing home care. Replace it with another adage -- "Buyer Beware." Research from The Best Is Yet.Net, covering more than 6000 nursing homes and more than 100 assisted living facilities, shows no link between cost and quality of care. You may find quality care in an expensive facility, or you may not. Similarly, you may find quality care in an inexpensive facility, or you may not.

Relying on price as the sole indicator of quality care can result in disaster.4. Enough Staffing Equals Quality Care:A recent report from the Senate's Special Committee on Aging showed that satisfactory care for a single nursing home resident requires more than three hours every day of nursing and nursing aide time. However, statistical analysis of the latest federal database on nursing home deficiencies showed no link between deficiencies and staffing levels, a finding consistent with several university studies. What should you look for in nursing home staffing levels? Severely understaffed homes cannot provide quality care. Do not consider any home providing fewer than two hours of care daily for each resident.

In homes with enough staffing, focus on staff attitudes. Staff motivated to care for the elderly will do so. Staff motivated only by a paycheck will provide shoddy care regardless of their numbers. 5. A Well-Known Chain Will Provide the Best Care:Choosing care based on the name of the company can lead to tragedy.

Some well-known companies do provide quality care. Others, however, boast long records of legal troubles stemming from accusations of neglect and abuse. Several states' attorneys general have simultaneously sued one such company. How can you know which is which? The company is not likely to tell you, so research the company's history. There you have it ? five risky myths exploded! What does work? Your own investigation. With a little research and several personal visits to nursing homes before you sign anything, you can avoid many of the problems experienced by people who relied on such myths.**********************************************Read more.

"101 Ways to Spot a Bad Nursing Home" is included at no cost in our special bonus package, given to buyers of How to Find Great Senior Housing (2nd edition).

Care2Learn gains APTA approval through the Ohio Physical Therapy Association for 6 Physical Therapy Courses launched online! Care2Learn's Accreditation and Operations team has received approval from the Ohio State Board of Physical Therapists to offer a total of 6 accredited courses online. Course content includes Shoulder Impingement; Medical Errors Prevention; Spasticity; Arthritis and Geriatric Testing totaling 15 hours. Many of these courses were available for other physical therapists around the country but now can be taken by the therapists who hold licenses for Ohio. The impetus behind the approval of these courses was Care2Learn's growth through its corporate business in Ohio."The courses will help busy practicing professionals receive quality courses via the web 24 hours daily, 7 days weekly" says Lori Coleman, PT, Regional Director for Life Care Centers of America and newly appointed Advisory Board member to Care2Learn. Care2Learn's board members are active professionals who review and pilot the courses in accordance with policies and regulation of accrediting bodies.

"During times of creative time management, Ohio PTs now have the option of utilizing Care2Learn's library at an average cost of 18.00 a contact hour for most courses. Further, we have plans to send in new courses monthly for OPTA approval", says Edie Deane, SLP/AUD and Chief Administrative Officer for Care2Learn. Although these courses target professionals within the long-term care environments, a staff developer/educator in any healthcare environment would benefit from offering the courses and concepts due to the focus on excellence in growing clinical expertise while earning continuing education credits, simultaneously. Care2Learn has received OPTA approval for the courses at www.care2learn.com however, Care2Learn always refers the licensed professional back to the state board with any questions concerning continuing education regulations.About Care2LearnCare2Learn.com is the website of Bradenton, FL-based OnlineHealthNow.

This is it. The end of another year. For some of you the next few days will either be frantic or quiet, depending on the business you are in.I hope those of you who are quiet are spending your time wisely planning what you want to achieve for 2005.For the rest of you no doubt, January will be the time when future plans will be made.Regardless of when you do it, you need to plan where you want to be personally and professionally this time next year. If there is no planning or goalsetting, you will continue to meander along and take what life dishes out to you. You'll be reactive, not proactive. When you know where you are going, you can work out the steps to get there.Do a Personal StocktakeWrite down the answers to these questions:What have I achieved this year? What do I want to achieve by the end of 2005? What skills, courses, people do I need to help me reach my goals for next year? List the specific ACTIONS you need to take.

Plan in your diary when you will carry them out. This last step is very important. You can have all the great intentions in the world yet if you don't commit specifically when you are going to act, your goals may end up being wishful thinking and never eventuate. If you are a leader in your organisation, do the same exercise with your people.By the way, these same principles apply to your personal life. Sit down with your partner, family or whoever you feel should be involved in this process and set your goals together.Nothing Changes if Nothing ChangesChristmas is an interesting time of year. Some are shining in their successes and can't wait to tackle the coming year after a well-earned holiday. For others it can be sad, reflecting on the year gone by all too fast. They had good intentions to make 2004 the year when they were definitely going to lose weight, get fit, spend more time with the family, improve their business etc.

and yet it didn't turn out that way. They are burnt out by working too much, keeping too busy and not looking after themselves.Goals were set, only to be broken because life got in the way. It was much easier floating along with the crowd.Unfortunately if you float along, you could end up anywhere. And more often than not, the crowd is heading in the wrong direction. The Final WordAccording to Henry Ford the hardest work known to 'man' is?'thinking'.Take time to think and plan so that this time next year you can happily trot off on your Christmas break knowing that you have succeeded in achieving the goals you set for yourself?you have taken control of your life instead of life taking control of you.The sense of satisfaction attained by setting goals and achieving them will boost your confidence and motivate you to strive even harder.Planning, commitment and action will get you there..

When is the best time to prepare for your success in life? What's that you say? " I have to actually have to prepare for it? Doesn't success just happen?"No. It doesn't. If you want to improve your life you have to take the action. An article by Jim Rohn who is a well-known motivational speaker said:"Here's the great challenge of life. You can have more than you've got because you can become more than you are.I have found that income seldom will exceed your own personal development. Once in a while income takes a lucky jump, but unless you grow out to where it is, it will go back to where you are.Somebody once said if you take all the money in the world and divided it among everyone equally, it would soon be back in the same pockets. However, you can have more because you can become more.

Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you've got. In order to have more, you have to become more."Are You Prepared To Take A Risk?Doing things you haven't done before can be risky, however if you don't take any risks you will live a very unfulfilling life.My Friend MikeMike has worked 12 years for a large corporation. Very secure, lots of perks and he received a reasonable income. He had a job for life. The only drawback, after a few years - it was boring.

He was miserable. He was wasting his life away. The organisation was big enough that he could transfer to different positions within the company - which he did do so. However, the culture of the company was the same wherever he transferred to. The environment wasn't stimulating and Mike found he was not stretching himself.

He was existing and not living. He was too comfortable.Mike was a reader of self-help books and also attended numerous personal development courses, so he knew he could enhance his life dramatically if he would just make a decision and take action. The Company PackageMike finally took the plunge last year and left. He ended up becoming a partner in his friend's restaurant. With no experience in this field he embarked on a huge learning curve. He went from a boring yet very cushy 9.00 - 5.00 p.m. job with a regular income to working 9.00 a.m.

- 9.00 p.m. seven days a week with barely any income. However, Mike was on fire. He was excited. He was living life (or so he thought).

That was 10 months ago.I caught up with him this week and he told me he is selling his share of the partnership. He realised that there was more to running a business of your own than working for someone else. The pressure on him had taken it's toll. He had been getting heart palpitations and couldn't sleep. The stress of it all was too much. The Moral To The StoryMike had leapt out of his comfort zone and took a risk.Although in this instance, he found out it was too big a price to pay, he wouldn't have known whether or not this was going to work out until he tried it.

Of course he had done all his due diligence beforehand, however that's still no guarantee that he had made the right decision. What Mike has learned from his experience, is that there is a world of opportunity out there and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. But you'll never know unless you give it a go.He's still excited about the possibilities for his future and is grateful that he had the guts to take action. The Final WordIf you want to become more or do more with your life this year, what investment are you prepared to make in your own self? What resources, courses, support do you need so that you can be excited about getting out of bed in the morning? Are you healthy enough to jump out of bed in the morning? Are you healthy enough to cope with your life?If you want to change then make sure you take action today!.

Travel nursing is becoming one of our nation's fastest growing professions, and it's no surprise. If you love seeing new places and enjoy exciting new experiences that evoke the feeling of taking an extended vacation, then the career of a traveling nurse might be just what the doctor ordered! Travel nursing enables many people to stay on vacation for two to six months in free luxury accommodations while earning high hourly wages at the same time.Yet despite all these advantages, many nurses describe to me that they've shied away from the traveling profession. Why? Because bad experiences with placement agencies have left them with nothing but a negative impression. They've been underpaid or lacked benefits, and I can't tell you how many nurses have complained to me about inadequate housing or recruiters who were unkind, uncaring, and just plain unavailable. The sad result is that nurses end up jumping from one agency to the next, always in search of the perfect package that's never there. In this light, choosing the right staffing agency requires a nurse to consider everything that is offered.

Some nurses emphasize pay as their top priority. Others require an excellent benefits package. Many travel RNs are location-specific and want to experience the lifestyle in the country's hot spots. Career flexibility is often a pivotal factor, along with customer service. The bottom line is, your agency choice depends largely upon one of the four following criteria.SALARYNo question about it, there are some agencies that offer more money than others.

So the first thing to remember is that agencies may base salaries upon things like location availability, need-to-fill assignments, and cost of living. Some agencies must offer noticeably higher rates if they expect to fill certain assignments where nurse-to-patient ratios are very low, or where a facility has extreme patient needs. If you're a nurse who is attracted by very high dollars, be alert for a potentially desperate situation you might be entering, and the workload it could bring. You may make more money, but you'll earn every dollar and more.Location also factors into salary. The California bay area and many larger east coast cities definitely offer more lucrative pay rates. It's also much more expensive to live in those places, so recognize the relationship that exists between salary dollars and cost of living.

I've seen nurses return from Hawaii saying they had a great vacation and made a lot of friends?but their purses were lighter, not heavier from the experience. You might get less money in an exotic location and come back with more money from a not-so-exotic location. My point is, your criteria will determine your priorities.BENEFITSWhat some companies may lack in salary, they make up for with benefits. Many agencies offer benefits programs that revolve around monetary bonuses or discounted luxury housing; and I have even observed a trend with several newer companies that offer entirely free housing to all their nurses. Take note, however, that those agencies may not ante up the really high salaries.

It's a trade-off, so they compensate you with benefits to save you daily, monthly, and annual expenses. Every nurse should be aware of what benefits they need the most, and then ask their recruiters to assist in developing a package that is tailored to their individual needs.CUSTOMER SERVICETo many traveling nurses, customer service and aid are the most important attributes a placement agency possesses. If you called ten agencies and only talked with one live recruiter, it's probably best to narrow it down to the agency where individual placement specialists were easily available. After all, if you're ready to proceed with a new assignment you'll want an agency that can make it happen fast and has recruiters available who already understand your criteria. In fact, your criteria may change from one assignment to another, so customer service is paramount.

Determine what you want and then find out which agencies can make it happen.FEATURED LOCATIONS AND HOT SPOTSWhile for some nurses, salary, benefits, and career flexibility might be the number-one interest, many others just want the obvious?to travel and see the world. If you're an adventurer who cares more about the travel experience than the money, then you'll need an agency that can offer you the locations you want. Not every agency can send you just anywhere. Figure out where you want to go, and then call around to discover who can send you there. A travel nursing career is absolutely one of the best, most rewarding choices any nurse can make, but it's important to select a company who will partner with you every step of the way. Before you jump in, do your homework and research all the best placement agencies.

Finding the agency that fits your unique wants and needs will drastically increase your chances of success and happiness in your career..

The nation's older nursing homes were primed for fire disaster that finally happened?tragically twice last year?when fires caused deaths of elderly residents at homes in Tennessee and Connecticut. The reason for the disaster?the homes were exempt from having to install sprinkler or fire alarm systems. That's why a leading seniors' safety advocate says the decision of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to mandate the installation of smoke detectors in nursing homes lacking sprinkler systems or hard-wired detection systems can help save the lives of nursing home clients, while providing increased peace of mind for caregiver families.Richard Blackwell is the inventor or an improved and better smoke detector has attracted national attention for its innovative use of sending an alert to a wider area than traditional smoke detectors. Blackwell is also CEO of www.SafeHome.net, which offers the NeighborLink ? Home and Personal Security and Smoke Detector and a well-known advocate for seniors' safety. He hails the CMS decision as an important breakthrough in providing necessary fire protection to nursing home clients who otherwise would be vulnerable to injury or even loss of life without the detectors. The NeighborLink ? smoke detector offers additional capabilities, not present in other types of smoke detectors that can enhance the device's life-protecting capabilities, Blackwell says.

"Unlike traditional smoke detectors, which have an alarm only in the area where a fire is occurring, the NeighborLink ? improved detector incorporates a ?network' of alerts within a 200 feet radius," he explains. "This means that a nursing home may effectively arm an entire facility at a cost much less than the expense and logistical challenges of complex installation of security systems, while retaining all the benefits of a ?network' system. "This is especially important since many times nursing home patients are not in their rooms, meaning that if an alarm were to go off, it might not be heard until it was too late." Blackwell points out that the NeighborLink ? system can be set up to alert the resident where the fire occurs as well as other rooms within the nursing home and staff members at their work sites. Blackwell's www.SafeHome.net site is gaining recognition for its one-stop safety and security products for seniors and others. He has gained a national reputation for his leadership in seeking a National Seniors' Safety month in November to coincide with National Family Caregivers Month.

And while applauding the CMS decision, he notes that while the CMS ruling is expected to have its biggest impact on the approximately 4,000 older nursing homes across the country, but more needs to be done. While newer homes are required by law to have sprinkler systems, Blackwell urges that CMS examine the benefit of extending the mandate to them as well. "The most important consideration has to be the safety of the elderly residents and staff of the nursing homes," Blackwell says. "That requires an efficient early warning system such as the NeighborLink ? smoke detector with its innovative and cost-effective alert features. A sprinkler system can help save a facility, but the saving of lives requires quick action, likely evacuation, made possible only by early alerts.".
